East Texas Campground suggestions

We are looking to take our 2nd trip in our truck camper and we haven't a clue what parks are any good in our area. We've been to Hanks Creek for our first trip but were wanting to venture out to a park roughly within an hours drive of Lufkin. Basically anywhere around Rayburn, Ratcliffe, Martin Dies...

Am I lucky enough to have someone here with experience in this area of the world?
  • Rayburn Park

    Martin Dies JR. State Park

    Twin Dikes Marina

    Forest Country RV Park
  • Mission Tejas State Park Is near you and is very nice if you like State Parks.
  • You don't really say what you are wanting to do when you get there, but I grew up camping at Rayburn Park. Parents even ended up buying property in the area. Unless you have a boat, there is not much to do, especially not for kids. Due to erosion, there is not much beach compared to the past, at least when water level is up.

You might want to check out Powell Park which is just miles away. It has a beach and swimming area and also some play equipment for the kids. This used to be a state-owned park, but "privitized" some time ago and recently changed hands.
  • First off, its hard to go wrong on any state park. Purvis Creek is great, Tyler is also.

We have visited a number of them, mainly NE of where you want to be, and want to see them all.

    Just pick one and go.
  • Mill Creek COE is on Rayburn.
Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park is near Garrison. I hear the landscape has improved, not so many permanent campers and better crowd control.
  • We really just like to go and hang out. Maybe take the dog for a walk.

I appreciate all the suggestions and will look further into each. I really prefer a heavily wooded area. I've just always been weird about neighbors.
  • Daingerfield State Park is really nice. It works out right for us for an overnight going see family in Texas.
  • From what I've been hearing from coworkers, for secluded/heavily wooded/waterfront sites, Ratcliffe is a great place. Plus they have trails and canoes. Surprisingly I've never been there and I group up in Lufkin.
  • I was curious about Ratcliff Lake. Seemed like a place to stop, but only the day use area is open. The camping areas closed due to storm damage in 2011?
