I will only add that September is a great time to be in Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park. The campgrounds are just a necessary part of getting to be there.
We have always stayed in Spruce Lake. That choice was made because we had friends who had always stayed there. I don't think there is much choice, though I hope the comment about Mary's Lake is right.
