We will be staying at the above state park mid December. This will be our second trip to savannah, GA. WHat are your favorite things to do at/near the park. Also, what did you enjoy doing at or near Savannaha.
So much to do! Be advised, though, that it's a bit of a trek from Skidaway to Savannah proper. Not a problem, but work a bit of travel time into your plans.
- In Savannah itself, my favorite things are: Just walking around the city, seeing the historic district, the parks, and cemeteries. My favorite stops are the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Bonaventure Cemetery, River Street, Colonial Park Cemetery, Lafayette Square, etc. etc. etc. You get the idea.
- On Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski and the lighthouses are fun. Plus there are several great beaches and a fun marine center.
- St. Simons, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, etc., are all great for touring around, especially if you like marshes and tidal areas. I can't remember the exact statistic, but coastal Georgia contains something like 1/3 of all the marshlands in the eastern portion of the U.S. There's also a great sea turtle center on Jekyll Island.
- It would be a bit of a haul (about an hour), but if you're into American history, a visit to Darien is worth it. The burning and looting of that undefended city, with no strategic importance, was one of the low points in American history and worth remembering. (The event was depicted, more or less accurately, in the movie Glory.) Besides that, Darien is a charming little town and a great stop for lunch by the river.
