They are nasty. I have seen them kill a horse that laid on top of a big nest of them. :(
The ants themselves don't kill you it's the 'reaction' to the venom of the bites that sends the victim into anaphylactic shock as an allergic reaction. The more bites at one time the quicker it happens.
Sorry to hear about a fellow RV'er passing away but IMHO here is the place to note that RV'ers shouldn't put their MH in drive without having a loaded and working epi pen on board at all times. You never know just what you will have a reaction to. Just saying.
