Yes, in popular areas first come sites are pretty much unavailable to people who aren't physically or mentally able to add on a lot more driving hours to their day.
Thanks for the heads' up about Montana.
Every forest has different policies. I wish they made the info easy to find on their websites, but I have not yet seen one that does.
Usually I gave to download a forest map and then read the fine print in its liner notes or whatever you call the essays on the back of maps.
