Fla Keys

It's been more than 30 years since I've been to the keys (in a car) and remember the narrow bridges and how nerve wracking it was passing cars. With the keys being so popular with RVers I just wonder what it could be like driving along those bridges etc
. Also I guess there's a lot more to do now?
  • My first trip to the keys was in '74. Those bridges caused me to have nightmares during my childhood. My second trip was last year and no issues on the new bridges. Taking a dually down Duval St. is another story.
  • We love the Keys and winter there for four months every year bouncing back and forth between the state parks.
We are kayakers, and have been to every off shore Key that you can see out in the Gulf as you travel south over the bridges.
We have a 25 foot travel trailer, and never have had a problem with the roads or bridges

  • I had to drive the old key bridges when my dad got the flu while we were down there. We had a 69 chevy c20 without power steering power brakes or air conditioning and a cab over truck camper. I was 17 years old with my 13 year old brother as navigator. while my mom took care of my dad and 9 and 10 year old siblings in the backtalk about skinny bridges with a top heavy rig that old bridge by Bahia Honda where you went on top of the bridge I became a man that trip LOL
  • We pulled our 5th wheel down to MM47 at Marathon last winter. Stayed at Knight's Key RV Park (about $70/night for water & elec.). This is a laid back campground with plenty of room at most sites. Some close to the canal were tight though. You can get down to Key West within a hour. While the prices are high down in the Keys you don't have to stay forever. We stayed just 4 days and had to get away as Key West was too much fun.

Just up the highway from the Keys is Miami Everglades RV Resort. It's less expensive than the Keys and you're not far from them if you want to drive down there. It's about 15 or so miles from Miami out in the farmland north of Homestead. Went to South Beach one day. That was fun!
  • Yes, it can get a little expensive!

    Bluewater Key - (12/15/13 to 4/30/14)
    Canal - $140 + tax
    Waterfront - $155 + tax
  • If, and it is a big IF, you can get into the state parks the cost is not so bad, especially if like us you are Florida seniors!
