In the panhandle there are many fantastic beaches. My favorite beach parks with camping are Henderson Bch SP, Grayton Bch SP and St Andrews SP. Topsail Hill SP in Destin is a state run RV resort. A stop at St George Island SP is also a good place to stay and visit Apalachicola for some of the best seafood on the planet. Other interesting parks with camping include Florida Caverns SP and Suwannee River SP. Stephen Foster SP is a great CG and the state folk culture center. This region of the state is typical of the “old Florida” I grew up in. Huge moss draped oak trees and long hot summer days spent looking for a cool swimming hole.
Once you reach Jacksonville there is Hanna Park, a beach park with camping operated by the city of Jacksonville. Ft Clinch SP in Fernandina Bch just north of Jacksonville is a good spot to stay and see this town. Center Street is a quaint small town center with much appeal. Lots of history from here south through St Augustine, which is a must see. Camp at Anastasia Island SP or North Beach RV Park while in St Augustine.
The Ocala National Forest is worth the drive to stay at Salt Springs Recreation area. Florida’s freshwater springs are the biggest and best in the world. Other points of interest in the forest include Silver Glen Springs, and the visitor center (get a forest map here) on SR 40. A stay at Blue Springs SP in Orange City is the best place for viewing manatees in the wild.
