Forest Fires in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

Hope the fires do not impact you.Yellowstone NP fires
  • This is a good site for monitoring fires in all the states. Zoom out on the map and wherever you see a fire symbol, click on it and it will tell everything about the fire and closures. If traveling that direction check the site constantly because fire information can change hourly. Fires create a lot of smoke so if you have breathing problems reconsider your stay. Good luck!

  • We just got back today from Grand Teton. We spent 10 days at Gros Ventre campground and loved it! Got there early on a sunday morning, and waited for about an hour for a great site! site 65 in A loop! Just beautiful! We visited Yellowstone from there. Wasn't a bad drive at all from Gros Ventre campground. Was an 11 hour day trip though but really didn't feel like it. We just did the lower loop, will make another trip for upper loop. To be honest we enjoyed Grand Teton much more than Yellowstone. The fire wasn't too bad the day we went up to Yellowstone. Could see the smoke and they had signs on the road saying don't report fire they were aware of it. Anyway as the days went by the fire spread and got worse and worse and when we left this past Tuesday, smoke was covering the tetons. They did evacuate lizard creek campground and Flaggstaff cabins and campground early Tuesday morning. Sirens went off for fire warning!! Feel bad for people coming in to park and finding out they could not get to Yellowstone from Grand Tetons. I took pics of the smoke but I don't have a clue how to post them on here. Anyway great trip!!
  • The road was reopened today, but the situation on the fire is still daily monitoring/management. Flagg Ranch and Lizard Creek CG were evacuated; to my knowledge have not yet reopened. Smoke was very bad in the area yesterday (spoke with Jackson Lake Lodge reservations).

The Maple Fire is burning in an area northeast of West Yellowstone, and is being managed to prevent its reaching the town. Smoke bad there too. The fire management folks do not expect the fire to close the West Entrance to Yellowstone (but fires can be a bit unpredictable at times.)

Check the inciweb sites online for information, also nps.gov.
  • A couple of days ago they said on TV that they closed the 'entrance' into Yellowstone. thought of all the forum members who might be headed that way.

Road to Yellowstone National Park entrance closed by fire. Published August 23, 2016.
  • Appears this will alter my plans into the park this weekend coming from the South...... Instead of going up 287 using the South Entrance, I will be needing to use US25 (to Casper) -> WY26 -> WY20 -> WY14 to East Entrance (over Sylvan pass). A few extra miles but still beautiful scenery with a stop in Thermopolis!
  • Heading there early October. Hope things have cooled off by then!
  • I saw that, too. Looks like they are closing a couple of campgrounds.
