Fort Mc Allister or Skidaway Island???

I will be spending 2 nights next month in one of these parks. Just myself and the dog. Just wondered what the pros and cons are. Which one do you prefere?
Thanks ahead of time for the info..

  • We were at both last weekend. Skidaway is more resort like, even has cable. I like the rustic feel of McAlister. Both have nice trails. The historic site at McAlister is nice. There are also two boat ramps and two fishing piers at McCaliister and a nice river to canoe or paddle. There is a boat ramp near Skidaway but I would not paddle the narrows due to the currents. The noseeums and mosquitos were out at both.
  • We loved Ft. M. Never been to skidaway, but we when looking into both, we specifically chose the fort due to its' surroundings and sites. Very nice campground! The fort itself is a nice couple of hours of exploring for something to do.
  • We often stop at Fort McAllister on our way south in the fall (bugs aren't a problem then, either ). Here are some pictures and comments about McAllister.

    Enjoy Savannah - it's a beautiful city.

  • I can tell you if the wind is calm and the temperatures are 70+ degrees, the (flying teeth) gnats will carry you out of Fort Mcallister. The campground sits across an earthen bridge in the middle of a salt marsh on Savage Island.
  • Beaker has it right Fort McAllister is more rustic, 30 amp power and dump station. Skidaway Island is more RV park like, with some 50 amp sewer sites. And as said above Skidaway Island is much closer to downtown Savannah and Tybee Island.
  • I have stayed in both, can't lose either way but Skidaway may be closer drive to Savannah.

I think Skidaway has a "cleaner" look with MCallister more "woodsy".
  • RVing is about what you prefer, not what the crowds do. Your choice will depend on what you like and what you plan to do. If you want to tour Savannah -- Skidaway.

If you want an historic and family oriented setting-- Ft M.
  • Enjoyed Skidaway and would recommend it,

but do not know anything about Fort McAllister.
  • They have just redone the sites at Skid A Way they are nice. Great location as well.
