Forts visited or worth visiting

Fort Laramie in Wyoming (and it's not in Laramie - it's on US 26 between Torrington and Guernsey.)

Fort Clatsop in Astoria, OR - where Lewis & Clark overwintered at the destination end of their journey of exploration

Haines, Alaska is built on the grounds (and using many of the buildings) of an old Army fort. Beautiful setting!

Fort Point San Francisco A civil war era masonry fort that sits under the Golden Gate bridge.

Fort Ross a Russian built fort in northern Calif.

Fort Tejon A restored camel cavalry fort between Bakersfield and LA. A patrol from this fort investigated and buried those killed in the Mormon Massacre in south western Utah

Fort Churchill a cavalry fort east of Carson City, NV arrested decay

Fort Bowie AZ a restored cavalry fort that housed the California brigade during the civil war

Fort Cummings, NM an abandoned cavalry fort, manned by buffalo soldiers.

Fort Craig, NM partly restored civil war fort

Fort Seldon, NM a cavalry fort and boyhood home of Douglas Mcarthur

Fort Sumner, NM a cavalry fort and the site of Billy the Kid's ambush and murder.

Fort Stanton, NM a cavalry for that was used as a WW2 POW camp and held the first Germans taken prisoner during the war.

+1 to Fort Stevens. Not only a neat fort to see, but a heck of a state park.

Fort DeSoto, Tierra Verde, Florida below Tampa. Interesting, wonderful campground.

Ft Worden and Ft. Stevens are a couple of them. Both heavy gun emplacements - bunkers that guarded the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the mouth of the Columbia River.
Good state parks and camping at both.

If you watched "Officer and a Gentleman" with Richard Gere it was filmed at Ft. Worden. The beautiful homes on Officers Row are available for rental. Big enough to house several families. A beautiful setting next to the shipping channel entering the Puget Sound from the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Fort Robinson, In Nebraska.

Lots to see and a great state park.

Fort Sumter.
Ft. Knox, but they won't let me in the good part.
Alcatraz. Took a boat tour.
Fort Chiswell. Actually I drove over it on what is now I-77. But I've stayed at the RV park there.

Loads of American History associated with Fort Robinson. Initially started out as a trading post in the 1800s, expanded to a fort for the Calvary and used right up through WWII.

We camped in the park several times and plan on going back in the future.

A few others we have visited that haven't been mentioned....

Fort Hays in Hays KS - Soldiers names can still be seen carved into the sandstone building walls.

Fort Knox near Bucksport ME (No gold there)

Fort Kearney near Kearney NE - Only a few buildings left, but easy off/easy on from I80.

Fort Mandan north of Bismark ND - Where Lewis & Clark spent the winter of 1804/1805 in their way to the Pacific. The fort is a reconstruction based on diagrams in the Journals of L&C. The original fort burned down before L&C came back in 1806 and the actual location has since been lost to history.

Fort Abraham Lincoln Near Bismark ND - Last station of George Armstrong Custer before going to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Several reconstructed buildings including the house the Custer family lived in.

Last but definitely not least - Fortress Louisborg on Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia, Canada. An absolutely amazing reconstruction of the fort and town that dates back to the 1700's.
