From Gardiner, MT to Las Vegas, NV

I have an Alfa 40ft See Ya pulling an 03 Tahoe. How hard is it to drive through Yellowstone. We would like to spend a few nights in Gardiner and visit Yellowstone.

  • Road closures are going to restrict your travel, especially from West Yellowstone. The road from Old Faithful to the South is currently closed for the season and the road from Norris to Mammoth Hot Springs will Close September 14th and stay closed for the remainder of September. An alternative route might be I-15 to I-90 and down into Gardiner. From Gardiner it is going to be a jaunt to Old Faithful and Geyser area, but for most people that takes only a day. The rest of the time you will want to animal watch (Lamar Valley and Mammoth for the Elk Rut), drive the Beartooth Highway and tour the Canyon area. With the road closures that is probably better done from North Entrance. And, the North Entrance is the lowest Elevation in the park, so it the snows fly, you get much less there.

That is what I would do....Grizzly RV Park is a great place to stay in West Yellowstone.

  • When are you going? Snow is expected in Yellowstone tomorrow night, and has already fallen on the higher peaks just last week. Currently the only way to get from Mammoth to the rest of the park is over Dunraven Pass, which I sure wouldn't want to drive in bad, cold weather in just our pickup truck, much less a motorhome - but then, I do tend to be a bit on the cautious side. If you are staying in Gardiner, definitely use the toad to tour the park, and definitely be aware of the road closures in the park (several sections are now closed for the season). Dunraven will also probably close by October, which will isolate the north end of the park from the rest of it.

Be aware that parts of I-15 were washed away yesterday in floods; I don't know which sections, but had heard that Las Vegas was yesterday considered to be unreachable by at least major roads from any direction. Things may be a bit better today, but do check ahead. Here's a link I just googled: washout
