From Yachting To RVing

Is there a guide or book that shows the camp grounds in different areas.
  • Reserveamerica for many state parks. In Florida it’s the only way to reserve a spot in our state parks.

They charge fees to reserve, change or cancel.

Many counties have small campgrounds and many are off the radar.

    Yelp and TripAdvisor can help..

Recreation.gov for Federal campgrounds. Beware they will close if the govt shuts down.
  • If you want a paper book, Good Sam publishes the most comprehensive one. It is available at Camping World for around $10.00. Like any publication is is out of date by the date of publication.
  • 4x on the Google search. Usually any given campground has some google reviews attached. These give me a pretty good idea what to expect. Then I always swing by RVparkreviews.com to see if it has recent reviews about the park. Passport America has a good listings book and is a great value. I used it 12 times last year and enjoyed significant savings. There are a some restrictions, mostly days of the week that the pass can be used, but with a little planning the restrictions are not a big deal. Again a great value. KOA has a great book and web site too. Like Passport America, is a membership fee, but it always seems to pay for its self. We always seem to end up getting a couple of free nights stay each year. Be sure to check out the state parks in the areas you are planning to stop in too. They are usually diamonds in the rough.
  • Web sites
    RVParkReviews.com
    Campendium.com
    freecampsites.net

    Apps
    RVParky
    Allstays
    Trucker Path
    Copilot RV

    Web Apps
    google maps
    RZ Trip Wizard
Google Earth (great for looking at gas stations)
    Eastern and Western Mountain Guides

    Paper Maps
    Trucker's Road Atlas
    Benckmark

They stopped publishing the Woodalls guide which was the last paper guide I remember. I still have one but never look at it when deciding where to go.

Oh, and you can throw away your plotter and dividers.

There is a guide for that, it's google.com. Just search "campgrounds in whatever area", without the quotes, and google will find them for you.

RVParkReviews.com is a good starting point, but if a campground hasn't been reviewed yet, it won't be on the web site. The seasonal campground we stay at has been around since the 1960s, but it is not on RVParkReviews.com. There is another campground about 15 miles away that is also not on RVParkReviews.com.

Start with Google and then search RVParkReviews.com for what people are saying about the campgrounds you find.

  • Probably the easiest, fastest, and least expensive "guide" for campgrounds, is to just do an internet search by typing in the name of the city, town, or location followed by the word, "Campground", and you'll get pretty much everything in that area listed.

For example, Nashville, Tennessee, campground. You'll get hits on local, private, county, state, and federal campgrounds in that area.

And remember, every state has a DNR (Department of Natural Resources) that lists the State campgrounds too, and links to make reservations.

Don't underestimate the KOA.com web site for searching for KOA campgrounds, and GoodSam has a pretty decent campground search feature too.

The internet is going to be more current, more relevant, and give you the ability to make reservations on-line...much easier than dragging around outdated books.
  • two are the KOA book and Passport America. be aware that there are KOA haters here, and you will get biased comments. PA is a good value if you can use it twice a year, but check the web site for locations, restrictions, etc. AAA has a camping manual(s) for various locations also.

  • If there are most will be outdated as soon as they hit the shelves.
Web sites like RVPark review do a fairly decent job of it. At least they are peer to peer reviews not something written by a single person.
