Swing through Madison, GA if you go your posted route. Story has it that Sherman had a friend that he had visited in Madison but could not remember exactly which mansion he lived it so he ordered his troops to skip Madison and not burn any of the homes there. There a a few grand old places there and the downtown area is really a treat.
If you get down as far as Thomasville, GA, there are several old plantation homes in that area and 1 or 2 on 319S toward Tallahassee have tours. Check online for plantations in Thomasville, GA for more information about those.
