Gettysburg

What is there to do in the Gettysburg area? RV campgrounds? We know the area is full of history, but don't know where to start.
Thanks & Merry Christmas.
  • For campgrounds, I'll add another vote for Gettysburg CG. As far as what to do, that's a question that will elicit many differing answers. If you find history interesting then plan on spending as much time as you wish in the town of Gettysburg and the battlefields. We get to Gettysburg almost annually and we always find something or learn something new that we hadn't before. As others have suggested, start at the Visitor's Center and don't forget to take in the Cyclorama while there. You'll have many options for touring the battlefields; you can hire a guide, go on a packaged tour bus, take a self-directed tour by CD or even tour on horseback. You pick what you prefer and whatever your budget will support.

We also like the Adams County Winery off of Rt. 30 west of Gettysburg; there is also the Round Barn near Ortanna that offers fresh fruits & vegetables (in season) as well as locally-made jams, jellies, salad dressings and relishes. There are all kinds of dining available in town, from diner food (Dunlap's) to buffets (Gen. Pickett's) to fine dining (Cashtown Inn and others). There are several different "ghost tour" operators from which to choose. See also the Schriver House & the Jennie Wade house. There is also a tourist railroad in town. You'll find a vast array of bookstores, antique stores as well as the typical tourist-trap attractions (the Civil War Wax Museum is worth a look).

    Enjoy & safe travels.
  • Most everything good has been covered already. Check out the National Cemetery and the spot where Abe gave the Gettysburg Address.
Gettysburg CG is nice and if you have a problem, JRs RV service is right there and you will receive top notch service at a fair price! We like to weekend at Artillery Ridge. I live less then a mile from Drummer Boy and can smell the campfires most nights in season. It is a nice campground as well.

When touring in town as a pedestrian, please heed the crosswalk lights and use the crosswalk. I can't count how many tourists have been hit in the last ten years because they jaywalk or are impatient for the light. Another side note. Be prepared to pay higher gas prices here in Gettysburg then surrounding towns. Even now we're .10 higher per gallon then the next town over.
  • There is an excellent audio book by Civil War historian James McPherson "A Walk At Gettysburg" that will be very helpful when touring the battlefield. You can walk, climb, bike, horseback ride, etc while on the battlefield. They just do not want you to climb on monuments or cannons. Walk in Gettysburg with reverence and remember the thousands who died.

If you mean things to do that are not battlefield related, not much. Its a pretty rural area.

York is about 30 miles away. Lancaster and Hershey are abbot 55-60 miles away. Likewise Baltimore. Washington DC is about 85 miles away.
  • I went online and looked at everything I could find about it and there is a ton of information of G'burg. We've been there several times and each time I walk as much of the battlefield as possible. We always check the visitor center for ranger lectures. Last summer our grandson suggested we take a Ghost Tour which we all enjoyed.
  • One of the most awesome places I've ever been! I felt as if I had been there before. I can't wait til I get there again.
