As stated, there are actually 2 different redwoods populations in North America. The coastal are taller. Those in Sequoia NP in the Sierra are much wider. Both are incredible and worth seeing. Take the time to visit Yosemite while near Sequoia. Do not try to do both in one day! Avenue of the Giants is spectacular. Great RV park there, Ancient Redwoods. North of Eureka, I love Prairie Creek's redwoods. Beautiful primitive campgrounds throughout, but not a lot for big rigs except in private parks. John Muir north of SF is beautiful, but was packed last time I was there. South of SF is Henry Cowell State Park. I prefer it. Great train ride next to it. I posted some good info about the two at TripAdvisor a few months ago. I was very disappointed in Big Basin. Avoid Sequoia & Yosemite during Spring Break. Other than that, you've picked a good time to be there. We are planning an extended stay coordinated with the opening of the aforementioned Ancient Redwoods RV Resort. It closes during the winter, because in wet years, it could be under water. I've been to Sequoia when it required 4wd in near blizzard conditions and when it was very hot. At the coastal groves in the middle of the winter and in the summer. There isn't a bad time to visit them except when everyone else is there.
