The answer is stupidly simple. Only make reservations at campgrounds that allow you to reserve a specific site. Games over.
Way too many nice campgrounds to have a personal policy like this. In addition, there are disadvantages to site specific reservations. One issue is that sometimes you pick a site that looks great in the tiny thumbnail you see on the web, and lt even looks great on satellite view of Google Maps, but when you get there, you find the table and fire ring is 5 ft elevation different than the parking pad. (Mt. Pisgah NC National Park campground comes to mind), or that there are overhanging limbs you didn't see that preclude you getting in. (even the host site at Ft Pickens A loop had low limbs to the point that the host has their nice Class A parked at an angle on the pad, nearly off the pavement on the back LH tires, and the front RH tire.) That park needs to do some serious tree trimming.
Non-specific reservations allow the "early bird to get the worm"
