We had a great time staying there in 2011. It was low key, less crowded and commercialized than the south rim, based on our visits there. I liked the atmosphere a lot.
Yes, many, scenic drives and trails for all levels, from easy to strenuous down into the canyon at the North Rim. A small C like yours will have access to some great drives to explore the N Rim area. Plenty of overlooks with parking.
The campground has a very fine camp store with some groceries, wifi and a sitting area inside selling coffee and books...laundry nearby. You can drive or walk or bike to the historic lodge which has ranger talks on the outdoor patio facing the canyon rim view...or you can just sit on chairs there in the sun.
The lodge restaurant is moderately priced, again with windows facing that beautiful view. Seems like there was also a little pub and an ice cream shop by the lodge, too.
