I agree with 2gypsies part about calling directly to the Park. The DW looks on line and then calls and makes reservations. We don't make a lot of reservations but you absolutely must at times and anytime at Trailer Village it's a good idea.
We like the desert so for us the drive is not boring, especially during the spring and fall and very early in the morning. We left about 6:30 on a drive to Williams from the park and saw 24 Prong Horn Antelope. Often at 45 mph there is a lot to see. We try to plan an overnight in Williams before going to the Park and the trip up in the morning is nice as well.
