Yellowstone, Yellowstone, Yellowstone. There is so much to see here and it will keep all your family entertained for however long you are there.
Here is a link to the Route we travel except we start out in East Texas to Ft Worth on 30 then take 287 to Amarillo. This is a good route.
A good route to Yellowstone from Texas
You can drive to Palo Duro Canyon the first day if you leave early. Spend the night there and look around next day. You can probably still leave that same day and head out and drive a few hours and make it to a Walmart at Trinidad to catch a few ZZZZZs.
Or if you need hookups you could try this.
Trinidad State Park
Then head up I25 and hit 287 over to Laramie and hit 80. Take 287 to Lander. You might want to stop somewhere around Denver unless you want a long, long day from Trinidad to Lander. When you get to Lander make sure to go to Sinks Canyon State Park for a good overnight until you head on out to Tetons. They don't have hook-ups but we have stayed at Sleeping Bear RV Park in Lander and it was very nice.
Then you will leave for YNP/Tetons and go up 287 through Togwotee pass and see the most beautiful site imaginable as you start to view the Tetons early and they get bigger and bigger. A couple of nights in the Tetons are plenty in my opinion, then spend the rest in YNP and 1 night in Cody as you leave. One of your days in YNP needs to be spent driving your toad out through the NE entrance over the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge, Montana. If you want hook-ups you will need to stay at Fishing Bridge. It is the most centrally located in the middle of the park. Everyday will be a long drive, but if you stay outside the Park it will be even longer. The kids and you will be amazed with the mud pots, Old Faithful, Hot Springs, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with it's beautiful upper and lower falls. Buffalo and Elk roaming in the streets. Occasionally you will see Bears, moose, coyote, pronghorn and bighorn sheep. We saw a wolf last time we were there.
When you are leaving go out the East gate and go through sylvan Pass and out through Shoshone National Forest. Road will follow Shoshone River through Wapiti Valley. You will need to stop at the Buffalo Bill Cody DAm and the Buffalo Bill Museum
Be sure to see Old Trail Town
Then you can head south through Thermopolis back down to Denver area and if you have days left drive through Rocky Mountain National Park before heading home.
I'm just partial to Yellowstone/Tetons. I like Grand Canyon but not much to do after you've seen it. You will have to go back to YNP to ever see all of it and you'll want to go back again and again!
Can you tell I love Yellowstone?
Wherever you go enjoy those kids. You will have memories they will talk about forever! Mine still do and they are in their late and mid thirties.
Have fun!
Sorry, just reread your post and realize you will be tent camping so Walmart stays and RV parks will not apply. Sorry
