If you want to stay at one spot for 3 hours looking at the same thing at midday when colors are all washed out you can say you have been to the Grand Canyon. You SEE the Grand Canyon by being there at sunrise and sunset for the true colors and shadows - all along the many spots on the South Rim. Hiking down is a plus for those who can / want to do it. Same with a raft trip. (BTW, years past we did some hiking but not down to Phantom Ranch; nor have we taken a raft trip. But we have seen a LOT of beautiful sunrises and sunsets)
