If you want to really see the Grand Canyon, you should plan on being at the rim for at least 1 sunrise and 1 sunset. Absolutely spectacular.
If that is the case, the best place to stay would be Trailer Village inside the park with full hookups and cable TV. The free shuttle has a stop at the entrance that you can easily walk to an go anywhere in the park. They even take you to places that cars cant go, all for free.
Now, if you are one of those who wants to just walk up and look into the canyon for a couple of hours, then perhaps staying outside the park will do. However, staying inside at Trailer Village is still much easier.
