Grand Isle SP

What's Grand Isle SP like mid to late May? Never been there and planned to several times, but plans always some how got changed. Weather, crowds, restaurants open, etc, etc.
Coming from St. Louis, MO and looking for sights, camping and general interesting things to do and see on our way to and from. Are planning on a stop near Eureka Springs, AR on the return trip. Always wanted to stay at Sam Houston Jones SP. Is it a thing to do or not? What else ya got?

thanks
  • Strictly a fishing island. Never camped there but the cg is at the far end of the island. There are commercial cg on the island also. Food is likely limited but good and if seafood fresh. Sunning and relaxing plus walking the beach can be a good way to spend a couple days. The small towns on the way to your destination are known to be speed traps. The island is dominated by fishing camps and oil companies. Go and enjoy
  • Which state's Grand Isle State Park are you asking about -- Vermont or Louisiana (or maybe some third one)?

Take heed about the speed traps. Don't even go ONE mile over the limit and I think in some places the speed limit is 16 mph. At least it used to be. But beautiful country down there.

  • My error I forgot to mention the Grand Isle SP we are interested in is in Louisiana.
Thanks for the input. Looking to spend couple of days there then tour throughout the state.
  • Grand isle is primarily a fishing destination. That time of year you almost have to some kind of access to a boat to catch any substantial number of fish. Later in the summer and early fall is best for bank fishing. If you’re going for good seafood restaurants, you can find some of the worst there. If you cook your own and you come while the season is open you can get incredible shrimp, oysters and blue crabs. Shrimp right off the boat are so fresh they’re cheap. Good restaurants are nearby but not so much on the island. The Hurricane Hole is probably good but it’s pricey.

The state park is roomy and well kept. The beach is a short walk across the levee. There are a couple of piers into the water and a walking path around the lagoon that’s interesting.

If you like to fish it can’t be beat. We love Grand Isle and go frequently.

If you’re looking for a stop on the way down the bayou and good restaurants try Bayou Segnette State Park. Just a few minutes from the French Quarter and the best seafood you’ll have in this country. The WWII museum is very worth at least a day trip. Don’t miss the movie! Sooo worth it!
Have fun! Hope to see ya on the island!!!
