Anyone done this? Family of 5 with a couple younger children looking for a one night backcountry camping spot in Grand Teton. There are tons of backcountry sites available, but most of them require hiking/boating in and appear to be tent only?Just looking for somewhere to camp for a night, hike a little bit, have a great view, and not be too close to anyone else. Ideally with a fire pit or fires allowed, but not required.Would love recommendations.

Not going to happen in Grand Teton. From the park website:Camping is not permitted within the park along roadsides, in overlooks or in parking areas.Backcountry camping in Grand TetonYou are more likely to find what you want in the Teton National Forest.

Don't know whether this would fit your definition of "backcountry", but there is a nice Forest Service campground named Atherton Creek at Slide Lake a couple of miles east of Grand Teton. Go north from the little town of Kelly to Gros Ventre Road, turn right for about 5 miles to the campground. A mile or so in you will pass a couple of old log buildings on the left that were used in making the 1953 western movie "Shane". The above-mentioned Atherton Creek campground would be ideal for you. It's not too far from the national park's awesome hiking trails and for touring the park. However, you really need to plan more than one day for the park. Three would be ideal for your family. Have a good trip! Here's the web site. Stayed in this campground two summer's ago beautiful. County past campground and around it is beautiful. Deer in campground and black bear up on hillside. Close enough to Jackson hole and nationalpark

To the National Park Service "back country" means places you can't drive into. You are using the term differently, so I'm not sure just what you want. In most of the area around the Grand Teton and Yellowstone parks, RV camping is going to be in campgrounds, rather than drivable dispersed camping. Some will be less crowded than others, particularly if you go outside the parks to Forest Service land, but they will still be RV campgrounds.

If Google Earth is accurate, this is just down the road from the Turpin Meadows Campground. We drove back to Turpin Meadows to check out if our fifth wheel would fit, and the road is just fine.

Just a little clarification here - if you stayed at the Gros Ventre CG, that's dry camping but not boondocking. Boondocking is the same as dispersed camping using some of the sites noted on here that are not actual CG's.

Are you planning on doing Cedar Bluffs to RMNP in one day?

By the way, Wyoming is Boondocking friendly. Used to fish up there some. Even the 'Miracle Mile' was Distributed Camping, but that's been several years ago.

Crystal Creek and Atherton give you access to the National Forest. Remote and quiet plus there are hiking trails you can venture off on Both are on this page

On one trip to GTNP, we checked this area out. There are several sites along the river that are actually parking areas with outhouses. We would not be able to get our fifth wheel in there, but smaller units would fit.

We like the Tetons much better than Yellowstone,,,, a LOT less people the times we've been there.

Good fishing at Cedar Bluffs. We met some friends out there once.

The Tetons is a National Park that is often passed by those on their way to Yellowstone. But then becomes one's primary destination, for future trips. The easiest campground to access, as well as the largest and the last one to close in the fall, is; Gros Ventre. Other notable campgrounds are Signal Mountain, Colter Bay and then a beautiful campground, Lizard Creek. It is a beautiful park to visit and stop and see the sights, so it is not to be missed. As in a recent trip of mine, below;

Ditto on Colter Bay. We stayed there last summer for a couple of days after leaving Fishing Bridge in YS. Great park, excellent views of the Tetons, hiking, nice grocery store and visitors center. Would highly recommend it. It was off the beaten path and in the middle of everything at the same time.

X many times on that. Seldom gets anywhere near full, variety of site sizes, well spaced sites.
