Grand Tetons

My family is planning on RVing in the Grand Tetons early August. We are interested in the Gros Ventre campground and need electric hookups. Anyone have issues with the first come, first serve policy? Or do we need to reserve another campground?
  • August in the Grand Tetons without a reservation needing electricity. Good luck.

Good Luck - be there early, late in August Possibly Sunday through Thursday.

    JMHO,
  • If possible slide your time to after Labor Day.
You should not have any problems at that time.

Only D loop has electric, as said previously, get there early, we got there at 9 am, we waited about 2 hours for someone to leave, we we're first in line, so we grabbed the spot.
  • Colter Bay is a little down the road from Gross Venture. They offer reservations and have hookups.

there are two different Colter Bay campgrounds. one is the RV park which has hookups but difficult to get reservations and sites are very close together.
the other is the regular Colter Bay campround. no hookups but they allow generators in most loops. sites are large and more private.
    we prefer this one.
  • We loved the full hookup Colter Bay Campground. It was a very short walk to the Ranger Station and the beach. We made reservations in advance. Our site was long enough for our 45' motorhome and Tahoe, but it was sloped side to side. Not enough so we couldn't level it but it put the sewer connection uphill. I'd highly recommend Colter Bay.

Two summers ago I arrived at G V mid day the week before Labor Day not expecting the DW to come back with one of the 36 electric sites. Moved to South Lake Tahoe on Labor Day and got into the city CG after lunch without a reservation. Am I that lucky as I almost always get into where I want to stay without a reservation??? I like the USFS CGs that do not take reservations BUT do not show up Friday. Thankfully even on Monday of Labor Day many of the working folks had to leave Tahoe to get back to work.

The freedom of No Reservations makes the occasional not getting in not that big of a deal. Being fully self contained makes going without reservations much easier and one of my favorite fallback options is a local small airport.
