My gray water does not have an odor -- really. It is hardly even gray! We use as little soap as possible -- it is Dr. Bronner's liquid. A few drops are sufficient, for both showering and dishes. And we scrape our dishes before washing them -- for example, I take the used napkins and pre-scrub the pots and pans before washing. That cuts down on the water use, and it cuts down on the particulates in the gray water. I don't want food particles sitting in my gray tank.
Lots of people in Southern California use gray water for watering the garden, too. But I absolutely agree that leaving a soggy smelly mess is just wrong -- in the same vein, we try to leave our campsites in better shape than when we arrived by picking up any trash left by prior campers.
