Percolation tests are done to test the soil before leachfields are installed for rural residential homesites. The results of those tests determine how much effluent can be leached into the soil without harm. Soils are excellent filters. Same goes for the gray water leach pits found all over the west throughout Forest Service campgrounds. Problems arise when the amount of gray water exceeds the soils ability to handle it.
