We "left home" in Michigan in '97 to go full time for nearly 15 yrs and since 2011 I have been living in Naples. So we/I haven't lived near our kids and grandkids for 18 yrs. Though I have zero desire to see winter snow, there have been some years that a flight back north was taken at Christmas time. There have been some times that the kids drove down for Thanksgiving including a few that were arranged as a total surprise for my wife. There is also a standing offer that anytime they want to come south over Christmas, I will rent a condo for them in lieu of their Christmas envelope. How did they react? Don't really know for sure but they were supportive of our going full time. Don't worry about it. They are the ones who left the nest and neither they nor their parents would have had it any other way.
Head south for the holidays. You are as close as your cell phone and skype.
