Every family is different of course, but for us, we focus on maintaining good relationships and having fun with our family (2 children & 2 grand children) all year long. During the month's we are home, we have lots of get togethers (often around a campfire) and spend "quality" time with family maintaining our relationships.
Then, while we are away, we do not feel the desperate need to be with them because we know that soon enough, we will see them again. We do leave Christmas presents behind in our home that our daughter picks up so the grand kids have something from us on Christmas Morning.
In the early days when we went away, we did go back home for Christmas, but soon realized that although it was fun, us being there on Christmas was not that important to everyone because we spend much time together the rest of the year.
