Well, I try to cut costs as much as possible on the way down. I use Walmarts, not point in spending $35 to just sleep overnight, and I avoid restaurants. Apart from that not much else one can do. I also put storage insurance on nay vehicles left at home which saves some money and put my house heat at the minimum, suspend cable TV and that sort of thing. Problem in Ontario is you still have to spend a fair bit on heating even when not there. No such issue in Vancouver. I do find i spend less on nickle & dime stuff on the road.
When the Canadian dollar was worth $1.10 US about 5 years back, my wife & I discussed going into our line of credit and borrowing maybe 50K and converting it to US. It would have been a smart move.
If I did not have a handicapped son I have to live physically close to, i woudl move out of the outrageously pricey Vancouver housing market and recoup enough from my house to move, and still finance winters.
