Heading to Durango, CO

DW & I are headed to Durango, CO to ride the Silverton Train. :B Anyone have any input to the local campgrounds? Thanks in advance for the help. :)

Riding the train up and back down can be a little tedious, I suggest taking the train one way and the tour bus the other. You will get two different perspectives of the area and you will enjoy it more. There are several rv parks in Durango, all worth staying at.

  • We have stayed at the United Campground. The train runs thru the campground. Real neat place to take pictures of the train as it steams by.
  • I've stayed at the Lightner Creek Campground twice a few miles west of town. I only got a cabin for the night each time since I was passing through on the motorcycle. It is a nice place, has a creek running right through the middle of it. There are on-site bathrooms/showers. Was quiet both times I was there.
The CG isn't too far away from Durango, and entering town will put you right where you need to be for the train ride.

If I ever end up there with my trailer, I would not hesitate to stay at Lightner Creek with my trailer.

  • Campgrounds - There are several nice ones, I'm sure someone will have suggestions. We stayed at the National Forest Service CG above Durango: not bad if you don't want hookups (has electric only) and don't mind 2 miles of washboard roads to get there. I'll stay in one of the ones in town next time.

Train - Great ride. Reserve ahead and try to get an open car if you want to take pix. Cooler too, but take sunglasses so you won't get embers in your eyes. I prefer the right side going up (leaving Durango). Also take a walk through the train museum.
