Hidden Gem Campgrounds Outside Colorado? (My Favorite: Lake McConaughy)
Hi everyone,
I’m Jason from Windsor, Colorado, and I’m hoping to build a list of “hidden gem” campgrounds outside of Colorado that are worth a special trip.
To kick things off, I’ll share one of my absolute favorite gem: Lake McConaughy in Nebraska.
What I love about it:
- You can literally pull your RV right down onto the beach and camp on the incredible sand.. almost like Cancun... ok, not that good, but for Nebraska, it'll blow your mind!
- Spending a full week on the beach with close family and friends feels like a mix of lake life and ocean vibes'ish :)
- The water is incredibly refreshing, perfect for swimming and just hanging out by the shoreline.
- It’s easy to camp as a group—friends can line up rigs together along the beach.
- There’s always something to do: Fishing in the early morning Boat rides and jet skis during the day Beach volleyball and cornhole in the afternoon Grilling dinner and sitting around a fire on the sand at night
- Some of my favorite RV memories are from that stretch of beach—kids running in and out of the water, adults relaxing in camp chairs, and everything happening just a few steps from the rig.
I’d love to find more places that have a similar “gem” feel.
What are your favorite unique or lesser-known campgrounds outside of Colorado?
Would really appreciate any recommendations or trip stories—always looking for the next great spot to add to the list.
Thanks in advance! Jason
