History of the Grand Canyon

"The region is, of course, altogether valueless … after entering it there is nothing to do but leave. Ours has been the first, and will doubtless be the last, party of whites to visit this profitless locality."

Really?! People getting blocked on a Grand Canyon thread? Too funny. My own view of the canyon is there is too much government regulation, as there is with all of the government run parks. Government forgets who owns the parks - we the people do.

And “we the people”, left on their own, have shown over and over the propensity to damage and destroy rather than protect and preserve.
  • Erosion of the highest degree. Usually a bad thing, but I gotta admit this one is pretty darned impressive!
  • I agree with the sediment "to each, his own" whether you find a geological wonder interesting or not! It does cause me pause when I hear the Grand Canyon described as nothing more than a River Gorge, just as those that think you can see Yellowstone in its entirety in a single day(been there done that type attitude), or Glacier Natl Park is a drive through adventure.

I have this visual of Mom and Dad getting all excited to see a Natural Wonder, the kids/teenagers riding in the back seat with their heads burried in a Video Game! Yes, they were there, yes they looked up occassionly so that they could say they saw it and they were there but not knowing a single element to what makes it a National interest.

Just my take on things...your mileage may very well differ!!
  • We really enjoyed our trip to the Canyon, got to stay in Trailer Village for a week, free bus service to anywhere in the park. Most impressive was the moment that the sunrise peeks over the edge in the morning, next was a native American piping the sun down one evening. We are unable to do a lot of hiking or climbing, so we just watched many others as they did. Our campsite was partially shaded, and several deer bedded down outside our door each night. Most exciting part was when a Prevost backed over a picnic table and the power post one evening. Learned all kinds of new words.

It was from the Ives expedition which preceded the Powell trip. Ives boat sank in the Black Canyon (of the Gunnison?) and he only got a short way into GC

  • I saw a great history lesson on the GC while riding a train someplace. Forget where..
