Sun Valley is just west of Holbrook - near the Petrified Forest there is a older small park called "Route 66 RV Park - nothing fancy though. Also it is a Passport America Park. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIIf coming on I-40 from the west you could go about 20 miles south to the Petrified Forest Nat'l Park road and there's a gift shop at that corner which allows a free overnight spot. You could then take the Nat'l Park road for a drive-through and it ends at I-40 at the Painted Desert area. Or vice-versa if you coming from the east. Have a good trip!
- CumminalongExplorerHow good is that road through the Petrified Forest Park?
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIPetrified Forest - the road is very good.
- Executive45Explorer IIII would stay at the Holbrook KOA.
Take your TV to tour Petrified Forest. There is no overnight parking within the park. It's also not rig friendly. There are many places you'll want to park and use the hiking trails. Most are paved and level making it an easy walk. During the summer months it'll be very warm. Take water.
In Holbrook, be sure to visit the TeePee Motel. (C.A.R.S. fame) Ask the clerk to see the inside of the teepees. While in the area, visit Meteor Crater and stand on the corner in Winslow Az, with the Eagles....Dennis - byronljExplorerTour the old jail/courthouse museum downtown.
Dave - NCWriterExplorerAbout 30 miles west is Homolovi State Park, very close to the interstate near Winslow. Has electric hookups, interesting ruins and hiking.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIINo, there is no campground in Petrified Forest but there is a great gift shop at the corner of Hwy 180 and the Petrified Forest park road. They welcome RVers and it's a very quiet overnight. The road through the park itself is just fine for a drive through. It's paved and only 21 miles between I-40 and Hwy 180.
I would recommend that if you want to do more than a drive through with your RV, just leave the RV behind at the gift shop and take your tow vehicle or towed and do some walking on the trails. - CumminalongExplorerthanks to all we are just driving through on the way home Monday.John R.
