holding mail

Last winter we had ours held till we got to where we spend the winter, took us three weeks to get there then we called and they forwarded our mail, 10 days before left that location we called our post office and they held it another 3 weeks till we got home.

In a small town that is fine but if like some places you have no permanent mailman or your permanent mailman bids another position then you are scrambling because the next mailman may not honor the deal.

I use the yellow cards to put my mail on hold. I don't use an "ending" date. They have held mail for me many many times over the "30 day limit". First talk to your carrier, they probably do the actual holding.

I did the mail forwarding with my Brother and when I got back, I had it sent to me like usual. The problem is they are supposed to only forward mail with the peoples name on the yellow forward card. Now I get mail for my Sister-in law and her kids, and she continues to get our mail. This has been going on since we got back in April. No good answer? Jim

Thanks for the info. Maybe i'll do a temporary change of address with one of the family.

We also do 90% or more of official business on line. We do have mail forwarded to a daughter who sifts through the left-overs. If necessary, she slips it into a "if it fits, it ships" box and sends it to us in care of general delivery at a post office where we will be long enough to get it. The rest gets saved until we get back home and then it is another "if it fits, it ships" box. Works very well.

Go to your post office and talk to them. Tell them what you plan to do, and ask how to handle it.

If you know where you are going to be, file a temporary address change. I have had many changes during the winter, each time I went to the PO and asked for guidance. My mail always made it to me.

They don't forward junk mail, and magazines after a month or so, you will need to make an address change to the publishers, same with newspapers.

I am also paperless for about everything, sure makes things easier when your on the move.

You can do it online but they will not hold the mail over 30 days they will either deliver it to you on the 31 day or return the first class to sender (first class is not usually junk mail) hence the need for someone to pickup the mail or receive your mail at your home for a day or two. If someone is going to pickup at PO then the paper form is the only way to put in writing that you want someone else to pick up the mail.
