- pawattExplorerSounds like it should work and reduce that heating cost quite a bit.
- John_JoeyExplorerWell I spent the morning going threw the place with a certified house inspector. I told him valhalla360's logic on the topic and he basically said he should stop watching HGTV because that stuff doesn't work in this zone. To leave the basement unheated will result in a cracked foundations roughly in the zone of the 2'nd to 4th block run below grade. Classic location was his words.
Did come up with a plan on how to stop the foundation from cracking using a minimum of energy. What it boiled down into was going four feet out from the foundation with insulation board using the rule of thumb that every inch thickness is equal to one foot of snow for insulation. This works for this place because it has a wrap around deck. Then turning the basement into a small insulated heated area and allowing the upstairs to go cold. Of course this is after all of the pipes are winterized and traps antifreeze'd. Makes sense to me. - Pop-Pop_CExplorerThat is why we sold ours,,,
- LiltippyExplorerLive I. NE Indiana. Very cold last winter. Heat over 2700 sq ft. Thermostat set at 50
Heating bill under $80 / month.
GeoThermal heating system. - JohnDoeExplorerDosn,t cost me a dime < I blow my lines out and turn heat off, the chance of having a problem with heat on is greater in my mind then if off and water drained, would only take about 24 hours to do damage and burst water lines if something happened and the heat went off, there is no way I would leave my house all winter depending on never having a problem with power are heating system.
- John_JoeyExplorervalhalla360 just wondering what zone do you live in for the winter months that have made you so knowledgeable on the topic?
- tomman58Explorer900 sq foot house at 60 degrees 1200 bucks worth of propane. 2500 sq ft house at 50 degrees gas budget 58 a month.
We can only hope this winter isn't as bad as the last. - tobanExplorerWe live 125 miles north of International Falls MN so it's cold cold in the winter. We pay equal payments of $127.00 year around. We keep the house at 60 degs when we are not there. House is 2500 sq. feet 2 story and 2 furnaces. We are on gas heat.
Toban - K_CharlesExplorerWe heat with wood and only use the oil furnace when we are gone which is about 2 months in the fall and then another few months after New Years. We have 175 gal tank ( about $700 to fill ) and it will all most always make it 2 months. When we are away for short trips in the summer we leave the heat off. 1700 square ft, no storm windows, no storm doors, built in 1790 and we try to keep it looking like it did then. We use about 1 1/2 cord of wood a month when we are home.
