For outdoor work where dexterity is not required, and for working outside where your gloves would get wet, I suggest heavier, insulated gloves. DW gets cracked fingers every time we camp, but I never do. I keep my hands dry, as the damp is what contributes to the cracking - constant wet-dry-wet-dry kills the hands.
I wear nylon work gloves for everything I can when working outside with dry items. I try to never expose my hands to cold, wet surfaces if I can avoid it.
