Yes, it saves some effort, but that's not its primary purpose. A By-Pass kit allows you to fill the hot water lines with antifreeze without first filling the hot water heater with antifreeze. It's more about saving the expense of 6 to 8 gallons of antifreeze than minimizing effort.
