I travel heavier because my diesel gmc shortbox / snugtop canopy allows me to .
We carry 2 of the EZ-UP Qwik-Shades .
Dang things are heavy but go up quick .
The best/ newest one is a 12 x 12 and typically we use it over NFS /BLM table or a folding table that we carry.
We often cook outside on a coleman stove and we will wash our dishes outside in 2 plastic dishpans .
It actually is no heavier / larger to carry than our old 10 x 10 EZ-UP .
The 10 x 10 gets used as a utility device for rain /shade protection when the situation warrants .
We have used it for shade near the lake or over a tent if the rain threatens .
We have used it adjacent to the trailer awning as an extra outdoor living area .
Our grown kids will meet us halfway at various camp spots and our little 21T is cramped with 4 inside .
The two stack on top of one another in my pickup and take up no extra pickup bed space .
Because I have a 9200# gvw pickup towing a 5300# TT ( 7280 gvw/axles) I can and do carry way too much stuff .
Weight is never an issue .
I recommend trying a 12 x 12 size because it is no larger to carry but a 10 x 10 will work .
We have used it at the Oregon Coast in winter for the purpose that you describe .
There are sandy /muddy sites in the state parks and I do put these up to maximize our outdoor space .
