We stayed at the KOA in Arco. Very nice campground, friendly staff and close to the National Park

We've stayed at both. Both are nice, but the check-in at Mountain View is lengthy because they've got rules an arm long, but with that said, we stayed only a night and we were on our way. I'd suggest you stay at either one a night, then move up the road past Arco towards Mackay and try to snag a spot at the Joe T. Fellini CG on the reservoir. Most, if not all, are full hookups, or at least water and electricity. Another great option is Torrey's Burnt Creek Inn on the Salmon River between Clayton and Stanley off of hwy 75. All full hookups and a beautiful location for you to tour from. Both are much better than KOA or Mountain View. In the mountains August can be relatively cool compared to the valleys. As for Hells Canyon, any of the Idaho Power Campgrounds are the best and have full hookups. It's hot there so the electric hookups are essential. Idaho Power campgrounds at Hells Canyon

We hqve stayed in the Arco area in June a couple of times. Even in June the temps get into the upper 80's with the surface temp getting over 100. This was at Craters of the Moon National Monument. I would think that August could be hotter.

stayed on night at mtn view three years ago. nice park for being in the middle of no where. i would stay there again if in the area

Arco in August is too hot, you'll be roasting in Hell's Canyon as well You're far better off in September wrt to temps and crowds. The rec for Clayton/Stanley area is a good one, it's a very popular area for tourists and camping.

Honey's Dry Dusty Bumpy Rarely Level Field Is quirky and right next to KOA.

I agree with most of the above advice. Too hot in August, Sept. better. Torrey's is a nice quiet spot and convenient to the Sawtooth area and Challis area. The area around Salmon and N. Fork is nice to explore and fish.

Depending on what you enjoy, Idaho has it all, just in different areas. With your 4-5 weeks you could check out the Cascade/McCall area, then roam on up to CDL area. It's all beautiful.

Mountain is our choice have stayed there twice, on site restaurant is great and nice people, we did not notice lots of rules or long check in - I think 4-5 days there would be a liftime

Just be aware that Idaho State Parks charges non-residents double for campsites, at a numner of their campgrounds. We went to Farragut State Park and had to pay twice the price for a W/E campsite. We could have stayed at a waterfront full hookups site on Lake Coeur d'Alene, for less money.
