They probably will not ruin a trip but they are VERRY anoying. DEET seems to keep them away a bit. Open breezy areas are not too bad but deep into the trees you will wish you were elsewhere. One time tent camping I tried citronella candles .... but they hovered around the candles on the table for warmth on a cool morning.
