In Vt. we like Champlain Adult Campground on Grand Isle just above Burlington with a stop at Ben and Jerry's on the way. It's right next to a ferry to NY that you could use on the home bound trip. Nice area for biking. Kind of a long drive from the cape if you only have a week.
Might be worth staying along the Ct/Ma. seacoast (Mystic, Plymouth, Gloucester, Boston) or the White Mountains in NH.
