I would suggest doing the Blue Ridge Parkway.Very scenic drive, plus several nice camping destinations nearby. We have stayed at Sherando Lake which is about 18 miles south and 10 miles west of the northern entrance to the Parkway.Sections B and C have some very nice large sites.Electric only but water spigots through out the loops and nice bath houses. They have a nice swimming area.Further south and a little off the parkway is Phillpot Lake.Goose Point Campground C loop is right on a pinnisula. Many sites are right on the water.Nice swimming beach. If you have a canoe it's an easy paddle across the lake. There are also some nice campgrounds right along the parkway plus many visitor centers where you can listen to ranger talks about the area.
Another suggestion would be Pipestem State Resort Park in West Virginia. This place has everything. Two restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, golf, tennis, horseback riding, boating, fishing, archery, nature walks and a nice campground. Some full hookups and some water and electric sites.
