Ideas for some trip. within 600-900 miles of MD

To answer your question about the Smoky Mtns of Western NC: yes they are indeed worth the drive. The Shenandoah Mtns look like hills by comparison. Lakes Fontana and Santeetlah are a beautiful jade color in a certain light. After white water rafting at NOC drive the Tail of the Dragon over to TN.

The scenery is stunning, especially with mountain tops jutting out of Lk Santeetlah near Robbinsville. Plus this area is at least one hour less drive time than the Ky destination.
