Lantley, whatever you chose you will have a great time. I would like to point out that HBSP is 16 hours more drive time assuming that you want to come back :). It sounds like you enjoy the journey as well as the destination so go for it.
The MB area is far beyond Assateague and the robber barons of Ocean City. Well worth going if you can spend enough time to truly explore. Charleston is only 90 more miles and is an awesome vibrant southern city with lots to do.
Hi Bucky I didn't mention it but I have done both MB and Charleston a few times. Great Places I agree. But as you point out HBSP is 16 hours roundtrip much further than OC,MD.
I agree MB is probably the best beach destination on the east coast especially for campers. However OC,MD is only 3 hours away. That is my quandary over lots of destinations at this point.
Getting the most bang for my drive time while exploring somewhere new and different. As my kids are getting older family vacations as I have known will start to fade away. I really want to make these last few count.
Old Orchard Beach ME, is very built up, somewhat similar to MB, Some of the campgrounds there your kids can walk to the beach and do there own thing. They have a board walk area loaded with arcades, food, shops.
The Main drag has 2 amusement parks (one is a water park) Lots of seafood restaurants or places to pick up fresh seafood and do your own clambake.
Lots of places to visit with in 45 minutes drive, Portsmouth NH (has also one of the largest Water Parks in NE), Perkins Cove Ogunquit, ME, Kittery Outlets, ME just to name a few
