A couple of other interesting spots from recent travels...
Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY. World class collection dating from ancient Egypt something like 3500 years ago to the most modern art glass. Technology, glass blowing, free hot glass show.
Carolinas Aviation Museum, Charlotte airport. Has the entire Airbus jet inside from the "Miracle on the Hudson" US Air landing. Lots of interesting displays like Captain Sully Sullenberger's uniform, passengers' suitcases, etc. The museum has a lot of other historic aircraft including a Phantom F-4 jet (my brother flew one in Viet Nam days.)
