This is one of those things that's on my "List of Things I worry About" but it's #38.
The connection between the computer and the bank is encrypted so it really doesn't matter if the WiFi is public or private. If you think your house WiFi is more secure, just because it's in your house -- you could be at higher risk.
Like someone else said - the risk of someone hacking into your bank accounts comes more from your daily PC usage habits than public WiFi.
To me, worrying about public Wifi is like locking a small window on the second floor of your house while you leave every other door wide open.
