If you are concerned about security when doing your banking, and you should be concerned, you might consider using a VPN when on public wifi. In fact, it's not a bad idea, even if you are on what you think is a secure wifi network.
I recently switched to Azire VPN, and like it so for. It ensures my connection to the interwebz are encrypted from my device to their server. When banking, there is a second layer of encryption between my bank and device, the bad guys would have to break two passwords to steal my data. Not impossible, but likely to require a couple centuries of computer time to accomplish.
I have found that there are sometimes public wifi networks that break VPNs. When I find myself on one of those, I do not use it for anything web surfing that requires a password/username. That means I'll check the news on Yahoo or Google, but no email, no banking, no Facebook, etc. If you can't establish a secure connection, you can't trust the network.
For those interested, AzireVPN at azirevpn.com is pretty inexpensive, very secure, and best of all, does not keep tracking records on your surfing habits.
