Interstate 81 Campground suggestion

Heading to Pigeon Forge, TN from Long Island, NY in July. Can anyone suggest a nice campground that is right of Interstate 81 in Virginia. Only want to drive about 8 hours then do the rest the second day. Thanks.
  • We do the I-81 from northeast TN to MD/WV/VA border area several times a year.

My favorite overnighter is KOA Walnut Hills/Stauton. I have stayed at all the others mentioned and find this KOA the best of all. We stay in the water/elec spots up front and they are perfectly level. Plus, I missed a reservation once at this place. They called me up and asked me if I wanted it to be credited to another visit later on, no penalty.

sdianel. Both campgrounds look great. Shenandoah is exactly halfway from my start. Fort Chiswell is 10 hours from start and would only have to do 3 hours the next day. I was hoping to do 8 hours the first day and 5 hours the second day. So hopefully I can get a recommendation between Shenendoah and Ft Chiswell. If not I will go with one of those. thanks.

Then the spot for you would be Lee-Hi C/G in Lexington,Va @ exit 195....it is about 1.5 miles off the exit on Rt 11.....and is located on a hill behind a truck stop....relatively new c/g....and was a well kept secret til this year...not a big c/g but they put in 8 new pull-thrus that our great......very little truck noise from the truck stop and a great view of the mts....
Ft Chiswell is exit 80 ...so this is 115 miles short of it...Chuck

You can look at Shenandoah Valley Campground in Verona/Staunton Va. I stayed there a while back when it was part of the KOA chain, nice campground and not far off of I-81...

Note that there are two apparently unrelated Shenandoah Valley Campground's near I-81, the Verona location above, and the other near Mount Jackson, VA. I can only speak to the Mt Jackson location, since I have stayed there, and it is a nice newer campground. Location based on your travel plans would likely be the deciding factor between them.
