The fastest route from Rapid City to Cody is through Billings then south.That is 500 miles. If you take the shorter route on highway 16 You won't be driving that fast through the mountains. Through Billings you are looking at an 8 hour drive minimum if you don't stop to eat. Much longer on 16 through the mountains. You have to stop for fuel. It could turn out to be a 10 to 12 hour driving day. For me that is not a vacation.
