- Tom_TrostelExplorerPikes Peak State Park, McGregor, Iowa is located at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi. Across the river is Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
Pikes Peak - DrewEExplorer IINew York has a few state parks along the St Lawrence, at least some of which I think would have some boat traffic going by. I had a hard time (quickly) trying to determine how much the St Lawrence Seaway is used these days, and what numbers I did see were typically in unhelpful units (tons and cruise ship passengers and so forth rather than numbers of various types of vessels).
I don't know whether they would be less out of the way for the original poster. - its_just_meExplorerWe really like all COE parks. Foscue Creek in Demopolis, Al and Gunter Hill near Selma, Al are two of our favorites. We are lucky here in Al. because we have 19 Coe parks.
- tohareExplorerWe stayed at arrowhead marina and Rv park in Scotia NY. for the entire summet. We saw barges, boats, a few bass boats and some gorgeous sailboats. Nothing like Tom Sawyer but still very nice.
- kknowltonExplorer IIAnother plug for COE CGs. Thomson Causeway near Galena, IL is one such, with a few sites (electric hookups only) along the river. There are a couple of county parks on the Iowa side near Dubuque that have riverside sites too, again with electric hookups. We stayed at one (name escapes me); it was a little seedy, IMO, but the view was nice.

We love Tom Sawyer but visiting there adds about 600 miles to our return trips to MA. Is there anything like it closer to I/80?
Return from WHERE? . . . :h

Stayed there back in the summer and enjoyed it a lot. But never saw any boats of any sort go by.
Beautiful, peaceful, green, park-like place on the river and we'd stay there again any time. - jplante4Explorer IIArrowhead RV Park and Marina on the Mohawk River in Schenectady. That part of the Mohawk is the Erie Canal, but I don't think there are any barges anymore.
- shayerkExplorerThere is a city campground right on the Mississippi River in Canton, Missouri where you can watch the barges.
- DutchmenSportExplorerI'm sure there are other campgrounds, hundreds of them, State, Private, and federal. What's so special about Tom Sawyer that you like so much that isn't offered somewhere else?
